2010 Construction Workers Memorial Mass - (5/20/2010)

On Wednesday, April 28, 2010, officially known as Workers Memorial Day, members and officers of Plumbers Local Union No. 1 joined the Building and Construction Trades Council, the Building Trades Employers’ Association, their brothers and sisters from the other building trades and family members at St. Patrick’s Cathedral for a memorial service honoring construction workers killed and injured on New York City work sites during 2009 and early 2010.

Archbishop Timothy Dolan was in attendance for the opening prayer and even donned his own hardhat.

There was a special ritual of remembrance in which the names of the twelve construction workers killed in the year since the last memorial service were read out loud.  Twelve empty chairs on the altar, but for a hardhat and a red rose, served as a reminder of just how dangerous work in the building trades is.  Those that were killed had left for work on those fateful days expecting to return to their families.  Instead, God called them home.
