Service Helper Training

The Plumbers Local 1 Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee have set up a special sub-committee to specifically address the training needs of Service Helpers. The Helper Training Sub-Committee created the Service Helper Training Program. The goal of the Service Helper Training Program is to provide job related training to make Service Helpers more productive, safe, and effective at work, and to prepare the helper to eventually assume the role of Service Journeyman. In order to allow the individual Service Helper to fit school time into their work and home schedule, the Service Helper Training Program is conducted under an “open enrollment” format. It is a voluntary program.

As a Service Helper acquires skills through “on the job” experience at work, and learns by attending related training sessions, the potential for advancement to Service Journeyman can be realized if the individual is willing to make the necessary commitment. To register for participation in the program, come in to the office of the Local 1 Training Center at: 37-11 47th Avenue, Long Island City, N.Y. 11101 or call (718) 752 – 9630.

Please note that some courses require another course as a pre-requisite. You must complete any pre-requisite course before you can enroll for the next course. The course schedule has been severely limited due to COVID-19. An updated schedule will be posted as soon as it is available.

What is needed to qualify for the test to change title from a Service Helper to a Service Journeyman?

  • The Helper must have a letter from the union office stating that he/she is currently a 5th year Service Helper.
  • The Helper must have a letter from the Plumbing Industry Board stating that he/she has worked at least 5,000 contribution hours in the last 3 years just prior to applying for the test.
  • The Helper must have successfully completed at least 450 hours of related training at the Plumbers Local Union No. 1 Training Center.

When all three requirements are met, the helper can register to take the next scheduled Service Helper test for change of title to Service Journeyman. Passing applicants will be recommended for change of title to Service Journeyman.
